Thomas Bush _ The Performing Station

A Samba Theatre and Cable Car Station.

The project builds upon a widely used transport strategy in Rio de Janeiro - the cable car.

The building negotiates the extreme topography whilst signifying the cultural significance of samba and the carnival to the city and the favelas. The cable car station connects two large cultural institutions: the Samba School and the

Samba Drome, whilst also passing through the heart the Morro Da Providencia (Rio’s oldest favela). The open air theatre is a dynamic element that performs alongside the station and the samba dancers, changing the spacial and shading conditions throughout the day.
